Double fun shore and boat fishing

South Africa Mosselbaai nov 2025

Double fun shore and boat fishing

Mossel Bay in South Africa's Eden district is home to this spectacular fishing trip. Mossel Bay has a rich maritime history and was founded in 1488 by Bartholomew Diaz. One of the few north-facing towns in the country, it has a temperate climate that has been compared to Hawaii (not in terms of actual temperatures, but in terms of the slight fluctuations of the average per year) and a wide range of activities at sea and on land. Most important is the great fishing in the temperate Indian Ocean bay from which the town takes its name.

We have scheduled 4 days of shore and rock fishing as well as 2 days of boat fishing. The main species in and around Mossel Bay are large sharks like sand tiger shark, copper shark, hammerhead shark, mako, thresher shark, smooth shark and more, as well as rays like black rays, eagle ray, diamond ray, blue rays and marble rays and more. Species caught from the boat include species like umberfish, white and black bream, leatherfish, yellowtail, yellowbelly, grunter, galleon and more.

All this makes it clear that fishing is done both from the shore and from the boat. Fishing from the shore is usually done with 3 to 4 rods on the big(ger) sharks and while you wait, you can cast from the shore with lures to try to catch one of the more than 370 species of fish found in this area.

This is what our pilot trip looked like.

Fishing from the boat is done on the local reefs in the area with a maximum depth of 60 to 80 metres. We get good results with both jigging and live-bait fishing. You fish with the one and only Shawn Mey or one of his dedicated guides. They will take you to the best spots in the area and will do everything possible to get you to catch your dream fish.

Enjoy luxurious rooms and breathtaking ocean views.

The luxurious Protea Hotel Mossel Bay has 38 rooms and is an ornate landmark, built in 1846, overlooking Santos Bay and the harbour. Slects a 20-minute drive to the airport and halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Nestled on the Mossel Bay coastline with the majestic Outeniqua Mountains in the background, the Protea Hotel Mossel Bay stands out from other accommodation. The stone walls and Mediterranean-style outbuildings betray the fact that the main building is one of the oldest in Mossel Bay and part of the Dias Museum Complex. Formerly The Old Post Office Tree Manor Hotel, the Protea Hotel Mossel Bay, located on Santos Beach, is best described as a hotel complex. It consists of a breakfast patio overlooking the sea and Cafe Gannet Seafood Restaurant - "Mossel Bay's Seafood House", overlooking the bay and Outeniqua Mountains. The Blue Oyster cocktail bar, adjacent to the pool, overlook Santos Bay.

Nothing but comfort and quality to have a good rest after a long day of fishing. And then in the evening, we can share our stories of the day in the bar. The hotel is located in the cosy heart of Mossel Bay so those who have energy left, the local bars are also not too far away for an evening drink.

We booked twin rooms for our stay but should you prefer a single room, this is possible at an additional cost of € 450,- for the entire period. also, breakfast is included in the hotel. Dinners will be served at different restaurants in Mossel Bay to keep it varied.

The boat, called Ninja, is a 32 foot Buttcat walk around where 6 people can sit in the wheelhouse. It is powered by two 150 HP 4 stroke Suzuki outboard engines. Furthermore it is equipped with Garmin live panoptics, radar and DSV sonar. And as it takes 500 litres of fuel that is plenty for a full day of inshore or offshore fishing.

With regards to fishing set ups the following will be supplied and is included in the rate.

Shore spinning rods are 11 foot Berkley venom taipan with 4 oz (110 gram) casting weight in combination with a 6500 slammer and 20-30 lb braid. When fishing for big sharks 14 foot rods with 8500 to 10500 size reels are used with 65 lb-80 lb braid.

When fishing from the boat jigging / spinning rods of 6 – 7 foot are used in combination with  5000/6000 size reels and 20 lb /30 lb braid. We usually fish 60-80gram jigs with this set up. The bait rods used are 7 foot with 7000/8000 size reels and 50-80 lb braid with 7 oz (200 gram) leads.  Furthermore we use slow pitch jigs and poppers up to max 2.5 oz (70 gram) lures.

This is what your fishing trip could look like!
