Papua New Guinea

Best of both worlds

Papua New Guinea

Best of both worlds

In Papua New Guinea you find the best of two worlds without compromise. First you have the river fishing for Papuan black bass, spottail bass, mangrove jack, pacific tarpon and the occasional GT  and grouper. And just some odd miles further out into the sea you have GT, Napoleon wrasse, sailfish, tuna, groupers, wahoo, dorado, marlin etc.

So whatever type of fishing you prefer this is where you want to be. Pristine areas in impressive nature. In 2004 this lodge opened and has since than been the pioneer of Black Bass fishing in Papua New Guinea. Through strong relationships with the land owners and villagers, they have  provided both fishermen and locals the benefits of sustainable tourism through fishing. Over the past 20 years, the lodge has been featured on various fishing shows including Monster Fish, River Monsters, Escape with ET, Extreme Fishing with Robson Green and Fishing Addiction with Mark Berg. They specialise in Black Bass, Spottail Bass and also Blue Water fishing in sensational locations and untouched fishing grounds. Find a trip that will suit your needs today and book your trip of a lifetime. It is this unique combination of unique fish that makes fishermen travel to this beautiful location and fulfil their dreams. OK it does not come cheap but this is the place to tick your bucketlist and bucketfish!

Papua New Guinea is a country in the southwest Pacific Ocean. It is the third largest island in the world and covers more than 462,000 square kilometres. It is mainly mountainous and covered in tropical rainforest, and there are also several volcanoes along the Pacific Ring of Fire.

It has a vast coastline of more than 5,000 kilometres, dotted with beautiful remote islands and atolls. It is sometimes called the Scandinavia of the Pacific. Above water it is already spectacular here, but underwater it is even more impressive with a huge array of rich coral reefs, sandbars and underwater channels. Many of these sites are virtually untouched.

Over the past decade, Papua New Guinea has become increasingly popular with travelling anglers and is a destination that makes many anglers' hearts beat faster. The atolls and reefs are a haven for small baitfish and, in turn, a whole host of predatory fish. There are many pristine reefs and islands that host famous sport fish such as Dogtooth Tuna, Giant Trevally and Napoleon Wrasse. You can popper and jig along the edges of the reefs here and experience the ultimate fight.

There are three possible locations to fish and stay here.

BLUE WATER: Kimbe Bay has a variety of reefs, islands and an underwater volcano suitable for popping, trolling and jigging. We target tuna, mackerel, GT, Red Bass, Ruby Snapper + more!

RIVER: There are 3 rivers you can fish from which range from 15 minutes to 1.5 hours away. Each river gives you the opportunity to capture the legendary Papuan Black Bass & Spottail Bass which can grow up to 40lb!

BAIA LODGE

For over 16 years we have welcomed guests from all over the world to Baia Lodge.  The lodge is situated on the beach front of Open Bay beside the beautiful Baia village. Built with all modern amenities and fully staffed to make your stay comfortable. Baia Lodge is situated beside the Baia village which is surrounded by various Black Bass River systems. The rivers near our lodges are home to some of the biggest bass on the planet, with some reaching over 50lb! The surrounding ocean also provides excellent blue water fishing for a variety of tropical species. THE ULTIMATE ONE

The Ultimate One is a 72 ft (22 metres) custom built vessel and will be available for specialised charters, fishing trips, exploratory trips, cultural expeditions and private charters for groups up to 6 anglers. Our 7 night charter will venture to further reef and river systems around New Britain Island. This vessel has no boundaries and will take us to places where very few have ever been. The vessel also includes a game fishing chair on the back hydraulic platform for those who want to battle with big Blue Marlin. Giant Dog-tooth Tuna will be the draw-card but these areas will also be teeming with sail fish, GT, Wahoo, Yellow-fin and Napoleon, plus every Tropical Reef species you can dream of.

For guests, there are three bedrooms each with a single and a double bed and a private shower/toilet combination.

For the fishing there are three sportfishing boats available. They are 7.6 metres in length and feature a 140 HP outboard engine. They are fast and feature a small top for shade. These boats can be fished with 2 and 3 anglers per boat. GPS / Fishfinder is also available and all boats are skippered by experienced captains.

Fishing gear
  • Rod: A solid rod around 5.5 to 6 feet with plenty of back bone and rated at 10 to 15 kg.
  • Reels: Loaded with 30 to 50lb braid. Best reels include Daiwa Lexa, Abu Revo’s, Calcutta 300 & 400, Curado 300, Abu 6500 & 7000, and most of the solid quality bait caster reels. Similarly, medium sized quality spinning reels will be fine.
  • Leader: 50lb to 70 lb fluro carbon leader is also required and it may be a good idea to have some wire when targeting the bigger bass and toothy pelagics.
  • Lures: Popular surface lures with the Bass are the Rapala skitter pops and tango dancer or similar in all colours. Imitation surface frogs are also good.
  • Medium and deep diving minnow type lures such as the DUO Realis and jerk baits, Rapala Xraps, Rapala Bara Mags, Storm Deep Barra, Salmo Perch, B52’s. Halco Scorpions 125, Poltergeist 90 and similar is also good. A selection of surface lures should also be included in the tackle box. We find the mullet, black/gold, Red and Silver, and natural colours are effective with darker and more contrasted lures the better choice. If you have done a lot of Barra fishing, it’s all similar lures but with an upgrade on hooks and split rings.

For the inshore pelagic, deep divers around the reefs work well and medium to large poppers for the GT's. Wire trace is recommended for the razor gang species. Smaller skirted lures from 3” to 6” are great for Tuna, Wahoo, Sailfish and Small Marlin. Fly fishermen can use from 8 to 12 weight but 10 weight as an average is fine. Small clouser type flies from 2” to 4” always work well when the white bait are running. Surface flys up to 6” will also work well particularly with the Spot Tail Bass. If you want to target the smaller species also like Jungle Perch, Tarpon and Jacks then a 4 to 6 weight will also provide a lot of fun with a range of small flys both sinking and surface. Larger flys 6” to 8” with wire when targeting the offshore Yellowfin Tuna, GT, Spaniards, and Sails etc.

Rod tube lengths - If you have domestic flights within Australia please check with your Airline what the maximum length is permitted as some guests have encountered problems. PLEASE PACK YOUR RODS WITHIN STRONG & STURDY ROD TUBES TO AVOID DAMAGE WHEN FLYING.

Fishing gear that is avaialble from the location itself is:
  • Rods we have Vemon / Penn / Wilson Rods 6.5ft long - PE 2-4
  • Reels - Penn Squall 400 Baitcasting Reel, Penn Fathom 400, Shimano Calcutta 300s
  • Line - 50lb braid / 60-70lb fluorocarbon leader

Climate of Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea has a tropical climate. The climate is warm, wet and humid on the coast and especially in the low-lying inland areas. There is a dry season and a wet season. However, this means nothing more than that the chance of rain decreases or increases. From December to March is the wet season. The months from May to October fall under the dry season. The annual average rainfall generally increases from east to west. Most precipitation falls in the Kikori-Kutubu area in Papua New Guinea: up to nine metres per year. Along the coast, the temperature is very stable and around 27 degrees. Inland, the temperature decreases; the average temperature there is around 20 degrees.
