Guided grouptrip to the Aamzone

We cooperate with Amazon-Angler for this fishing trip. This company has specialised in perfectly organized fishing trips to the furthest corners of the Amazon for many years. Steve Townson, the owner of Amazon Angler, has arranged these fishing trips in detail and you are in the best of hands. All these trips are unique fishing trips to different locations in the Amazon jungle.

This fishing trip is for adventurous fishermen and will take you to the Jaguar Explorer Camp in the jungle of Guyana to the upper reaches of the Essequibo River. Here you will fish deep into the pristine rainforest of beautiful Guyana, also known as 'The Land of Many Waters'.

With over 80 miles of fishable river, there are still areas here that have rarely, if ever, seen a rod or a lure. The Essequibo River runs through 100% virgin rainforest, cascading over huge rocks and boulders, creating deep pools and waterways for large catfish and many other species of fish that can be caught here.

This is what the trip looked like in february 2023.

Among others arapaima, two species of peacock bass, bicuda, wolffish, payara, big black piranha, cobi, couti, big red and silver pacu, piraiba, redtail catfish, tiger catfish, jandia catfish and many more species. There is a huge variety of predatory fish to be caught in these rivers. With lures, flies, jigs, spoons, poppers, cutbaits etc. dozens of different species of fish will keep the fanatic angler busy during the entire fishing trip. Our highest number of species in 1 trip was 47 so far!

Hard fighting 'Yellow' and 'Lake' peacock bass are two of the toughest and meanest bass species found in the Amazon rainforest. These amazing predators can be caught on medium-sized walk-the-dog lures such as spooks and skitter walks, small poppers, prop baits and on jigs, flies and minnow baits. They will crush your surface lures and there's nothing like the strike of a peacock bass to make your lure explode in the surface. The bigger 'Yellows' can weigh up to 17 pounds.

The payara (also known as vampire fish) and the pike-like bicuda can also be caught on surface lures, minnowbaits, jigs and flies in the faster streamingwater. They are often seen catching baitfish on the surface. The payara is also regularly caught with cutbaits.

Monkey fish grow enormously here and are also caught regularly. They crush surface lures, minnowbaits, jigs and flies. Giant black piranhas and cobi can also be caught with cutbaits, or smaller lures, spoons and deep running lures in the deeper pools and runs of the falls.

In addition, you can really catch some giant monsters on this trip. These arapaima and catfish  species are real "river monsters"! To catch them, large cutbaits, dead and live baitfish are used. Arapaima's are ancient impressive beasts that look very prehistoric, with armoured giant scales all over their body. This is one of the top fish that anglers have high on their list of fish to tick off. The chances of catching one or more here are very high.

They live in quiet backwaters and bays, usually in oxygen-poor water and can reach over 500 (!) pounds and 4 metres in length. Only circle hooks are used here to prevent fish from being wrongly hooked. These giants are then carefully returned to the spot where they were caught.

The two species of "shovelhead tigercats" are both fast, streamlined and strike hard. These hieroglyphic predators are also caught on lures. Weighing more than 50 pounds, they are strong fish to catch.  The leopard or jundia catfish is a piece of dynamite for a fish of its size. On average, it weighs 15 pounds, but specimens of 25 pounds have also been caught here.

The redtail catfish is one of the hardest fighting catfish in the entire Amazon in relation to its size. An 80 lbs redtail will drag you all over the river and make your reel work hard.  Jau catfish are the rottweilers of the river and live under the rocks and in the fast water and will take your bait deep into their caves! The king of all catfish is the lau-lau or also called piraiba. This fish can weigh over 400 pounds and when hooked, it can take off at a speed of up to 40 miles per hour. So it may take you some time to land one of these huge fish.

There are also many other species to be caught here for the keen angler who is prepared to go the extra mile. Anglers can catch nut, fruit and berry-eating fish all day long, such as large red and silver pacu, couti, aracus and many more of these species. All these smaller species also make great fresh bait for catfish fishing! These strange and wonderful species are all perfect to catch here with for example corn, nuts, fruit, potatoes, fish strips or freshwater snails.

There are two different camps during this fishing trip:
  1. Kanuku Suites hotel in Georgetown
  2. Jaguar Explorer Camp
On arrival in Guyana you will stay the first and last night in the Kanaku Suites hotel on the basis of a shared two-person room, including breakfast. This three star hotel offers us fishermen a good stay and comfort. No fuss, just a good bed and breakfast.

The Jaguar Explorer Camp is located along the Essequibo River and has 5 rooms for a total of 10 anglers. That means that the rooms are shared. The lodge has a terrace where you can sit outside after a hard day's fishing and of course there is also a kitchen where three delicious meals are prepared daily. The lodge offers a good stay for the entire stay.

In the earlier edition of 2023, we also fished a few days from a safari camp in the jungle. However, the government has ruled that free camping is no longer allowed in this protected area. Hence, the entire operation takes place from the Jaguar Expolrer Camp which provides a lot more comfort and where other groups that preceded us have caught at least as many peacock, arapaima and many more species.

At this location, different types of fishing boats are used. These are flat-bottomed boats and local fishing boats of 16 to 19 feet and they are equipped with outboard motors of 10 to 25 HP. You fish with two persons per boat and one English speaking guide who will do everything to let you catch the best and biggest fish.

A list of recommended tackle will be provided with your travel documents but expect sturdy jerkbait rods, strong boat rods and ditto reels and lines to resist these fish. And also a good selection of surface lures, jerks/stickbaits, bucktails, crankbaits, jigs, super strong hooks and leaders.

You need to bring your own equipment on this fishing trip. It is not possible to rent or buy equipment locally.

All fishing trips to the Amazon are a true fishing adventure. Despite years of experience and thorough organisation of the trips, it can always happen that on these expeditions things happen that are not in the regular script. Participants of this fishing trip must therefore realise that in exceptional cases the trip may not go entirely according to plan and that a certain flexibility may be required.

Please be aware that there is a strict limit of 20 kilo in total per person, including hand luggage.
